Looking at the Symptoms of a Yeast Infection

A lot of the time women will develop a yeast infection but not realise that is what has happened. This is because there are a lot of women who do not know what the symptoms of a yeast infection are and so do not recognise the signs when they happen.

The cause of a yeast infection is the over growth of a fungus called Candida Albicans. The fungus lives usually harmlessly on the body but when it can multiply it does so quickly and leads to a yeast infection. It can happen to anyone, women and men and even children and happens on or in the warm and damp parts of the body like the genitals and the mouth. This is why a vaginal yeast infection is so common, the vagina is a great environment for the fungus to breed.

There are several symptoms to look out for. Itching is a very common one. It starts out mild but gets more severe if the infection is not treated. There can also be redness, swelling, burning and soreness. Some women get a white discharge that is cottage cheese like in consistency and some say there is an odor that comes with it. Pain when having sex is also another sign which is why it is a good idea to abstain from sex during this time. Also since a yeast infection can be passed on during sex it can become a vicious cycle of partners passing it back and forth between them. Urinating can also be painful as the skin around the vagina is sore and sensitive. The pain can be a burning feeling and it is uncomfortable to have it rubbed or touched there.

Not all women experience all the symptoms and they differ from case to case. Also there are other vaginal infections women can get that have similar symptoms so it is ideal to have a doctor examine you and get a proper diagnosis.
