What Happens if You Do Not Treat a Yeast Infection
This article is looking at the risks of ignoring a vaginal yeast infection. There are obvious signs of a yeast infection including itching, inside and outside the vagina, a milky or cottage cheese like discharge, redness, swelling and pain when urinating and/or when having intercourse. Be sure you have a yeast infection and not something else that has similar symptoms such as bacterial vaginosis, STDs or a urinary tract infection.
There are several reasons why a woman gets a vaginal yeast infection including being on a long course of antibiotics (which kill the good bacteria as well as the bad, and the good are the ones that control the fungus growth), diabetes (sugar feeds the yeast), pregnancy (any upset in hormonal balance can trigger an infection) and more.
The problem with a yeast infection is that it is very unlikely to just get better by itself. You need to identify the root cause and deal with it, whether that be correcting your diet, your blood sugar levels, replenishing good bacteria, finding alternative treatments other than antibiotics and so on. Treating a yeast infection does not mean you have to use chemicals though. You can choose perfectly effective natural remedies as a way to rid yourself of the infection. Probiotics are one way to get the vagina back to the normal level of flora.
The potential issue in not treating the infection is miss-diagnosis. You think it is just a yeast infection but in fact it is a urinary infection or an STD. Also having a yeast infection can actually make a person more likely to get an STD. A healthy vagina is more able to defend itself than one that is already sore and raw from a yeast infection. STDs that look like a yeast infection include chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes and trichomonas. Another vaginal ailment that the symptoms could be a sign of is bacterial vaginosis.
If after self treating with either natural remedies or over the counter treatments the symptoms have not gone away then you should see your doctor and get a proper diagnosis.
