What Is Vaginitis?
Vaginitis is a term used to explain a number of conditions that cause infection or soreness of the vagina, but this does not answer the question “What is Vaginitis?” Vulvovaginitis applies to soreness of the vagina and vulva which is the outer female genitals. These disorders are caused by bacteria, yeast and viruses and also by chemicals that are found in creams, sprays and even clothing which has come into contact with the vagina. Sometimes vaginitis is also as a consequence of sex as it can be transferred between partners.
Although it does not directly answer the question, “What is Vaginitis”, the signs of vaginitis can differ according to what has caused the infection. Some women are lucky enough to have no symptoms. But for those who do, the most usual signs are: a nasty smelling vaginal discharge; an annoying tickling on the outer vagina; uncomfortable sex; burning feeling when going to the toilet.
Vaginal discharge is usual for women and it is either clear or a little cloudy, but it is not annoying and not smelly. The amount of discharge does differ during the usual menstrual cycle. Sometimes there can be a tiny amount of a watery substance and at others a considerably thicker discharge can occur during the month, but do not worry this is not abnormal. However, a secretion that has a smell and is annoying is not usual and it may be causing you to itch and have a burning sensation. The burning can possibly be like a bladder infection.
The most annoying time for the itching is at night, but of course any time of day is irksome. It is probably better if you avoid sex as this can make matters worse. Of course if you are concerned do consult your health-care worker. There are several types of vaginitis. They are: Candida or yeast; bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, Chlamydia, viral and non-infectious vaginitis. These infections can have dissimilar signs, which make it hard for you to decide what type you have even a doctor can find it difficult. The reason for this is that there can be more than one type of vaginitis in existence and also sometimes there can be no symptoms.
There are some easy things you can do to help prevent vaginitis and vaginal infections and prevention is the best medicine. Wear cotton underwear and only during the day; don’t use any kind of lubrications; avoid sex; do not use soaps or lotions; do not wear close-fitting clothing for too long; try not to scratch; see your doctor if your symptoms have not gone away; wipe from front to back after going to the toilet.
If you get enough sleep, have a good diet – yoghurt is an excellent food to help avoid vaginitis; drink plenty of liquids and have good hygiene then your body can only benefit from it. Also don’t be too embarrassed to consult your doctor if you need too.
